Sustainable Living and You

"I believe it to be perfectly possible for an individual to adopt the way of life of the future. . . without having to wait for others to do so." Mohandas Ghandi.

Meaning of Sustainability

"…meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs."
--Brundtland Commission of the United Nations on March 20, 1987

At the Solana Center we recognize the value of the natural resources and fragile eco system we have, and realize that they must be protected.  In practice we work towards Zero Waste: a philosophy that aims to guide people in the redesign of resource systems with the aim of reducing waste to, or close to zero.

Some of the environmental solutions the Center is actively pursuing through our many programs are:

  • Decrease wasteful additions to our landfills through recycling and reuse.
  • Eliminate ocean-bound waste, counteract toxic runoff, and provide eductaion on ocean stewardship to local communities.
  • Reduce use of pesticides that kill bees and add toxic runoff to our watersheds.
  • Prevent de-forestation that leads to polluted air and deterioration of the soil.
  • Reduce consumption of fossil fuels that contribute to climate change.

Solana Center’s Sustainability Programs

At the Solana Center, we are actively engaged in the following programs that facilitate sustainable living:  Composting, Organic Gardening, Watershed Education, Water Conservation and Irrigation, Household Hazardous Waste and Used Oil Education, and Recycling programs in schools, Multi-Family Complexes and the commercial sector.

Solana Center began in 1983 as the Solana Recyclers. We have learned since then that recycling is the last line of defense to protect the planet. We must rethink our actions and refuse to continue our destructive practices.

We espouse positive actions that individuals, businesses, and communities can take to prevent further degradation of our planet.

Solana Center supports “The Triple Bottom Line” for businesses, improving the environment while addressing the needs of people, profit and the planet.
