Multi-Family Complex Recycling (MFC Recycling) is recycling in an apartment or condominium. The County of San Diego has a mandatory recycling ordinance which requires unincorporated county residents, both residential and commercial, to recycle.
Residents are prohibited to put the following items in the trash:
ALUMINUM CANS
GLASS BOTTLES & JARS
LARGE APPLIANCES
NEWSPAPER
MIXED PAPER
PLASTIC BEVERAGE BOTTLES
TIN & BI-METAL CANS
YARD WASTE
What is the benefit?
Before implementation, many complexes throw out all waste, recyclable or otherwise. After implementation however an average 53% of that waste which is recyclable is properly disposed of, through reuse! This is important because a large population of San Diego residents live in multi-family housing and by recycling their waste we can significantly reduce the amount of garbage that is sent to the landfills.
Does it cost money?
Yes, but the savings that result (reduced cost in trash hauling, increased conservation) defray the costs somewhat.
So why get it if it costs money?
MFC recycling is legally required in some counties. And even if it is not a requirement where you live, recycling is beneficial and money saving. San Diego produces more garbage per person then any other city in the United States! It's time to clean up our act.
So, what are the rules?
The guidelines for what can be recycled depend on the service provider hired for the program. Check with the provider that you choose for approved materials.
