Light bulbs, being of varying composition, are not the easiest materials to dispose of. However, state law currently prohibits the disposal of light bulbs that contain mercury in the normal trash can. As such, they must disposed of differently.
Are there any light bulbs that can be thrown out?
Legally speaking, only incandescent bulbs can be put in the trash. However, as they contain lead, they are potentially hazardous.
What about recycling them?
Good question! Most bulbs can be recycled, but they need to be dealt with specially. You can’t put bulbs in your normal recycling because they are both metal and glass, and because most of them contain toxic substances, such as lead or mercury. To recycle them, you must arrange to drop them off at a special disposal center.
What do they do with the bulbs at the center?
The process through which the bulbs are recycled is similar to the way in which E-Waste is handled. The materials are shredded in a sealed environment, sorted, and then prepared for reuse.
Which bulbs contain mercury?
Compact fluorescent (CFL) bulbs contain mercury. Special care must be taken with broken ones, as the fragments are toxic if ingested or inhaled.
Where can I get rid of my old bulbs?
To locate a center near you, call 1-800-237-BLUE, or search online using www.wastefreesd.org. Also, all Home Depot stores will accept used CFL bulbs. Before taking the bulbs to the recycling center, make sure to package them in a sealed plastic bag.
